With a company motto of big enough to count and small enough to care, the Queensland based livestock agency network business, Grant Daniel & Long has grown to be one of Australia’s largest and most successful private agencies with a proven track record.
Grant Daniel & Long was founded in 1997, when the highly experienced and respected livestock agents Noel Grant and Jamie Long, joined with the youthful team of Peter Daniel and John Cullen of Dalby Rural Supplies.
From its humble beginnings in 1997, Grant Daniel & Long opened its doors with a head office strategically based in Dalby and it quickly expanded to six branches in Wandoan, Taroom, Meandarra, Blackall and Miles.
Today the company covers a footprint of 13 branches forming a marketing network throughout cattle producing and sheep growing areas of southern and central-western Queensland with branches at Longreach, Roma, Cunnamulla, Goondiwindi, Millmerran, Quilpie, and St George added to the network.
From inception the carefully balanced blend of experience, knowledge and youthful enthusiasm worked. Results often speak louder than words and in the first year of trading the company sold 57,000 cattle, representing 25% of the total yarding through the Dalby Saleyards.
Now some 14 years later the company continues to grow in strength and today the company’s market share through the Dalby Saleyards represents 33% of the combined agent’s throughput. It should be noted that Dalby and Roma are the two largest livestock saleyards in Australia.
Grant Daniel and Long’s business ethics has been built on honesty, integrity, professional advice and service to the clients. Overtime the company has added merchandise, insurance, stud stock, rural property and real estate sales and finance to services its widening rural client base.
Grant Daniel & Long’s philosophy for success has been its efficient management and professional staff both in the field and administration.
Staff employed by Grant Daniel & Long is the company’s greatest asset, and they have been hand picked and selectively located in the areas where they work with their clients to deliver the quality service by targeting the client’s needs, and having a solid understanding of the marketplace.
Currently, Grant Daniel & Long has approximately 50 staff members and is committed to providing ongoing training for all staff to enhance their skills.
The company encourages staff to participate in industry related competitions, and takes great pride in their results and achievements.
Over the years Grant Daniel & Long have nominated many entrants in the finals for the Queensland Young Auctioneers Competition. This high profile event, which is conducted by ALPA, selects only eight entrants out of 50 contestants throughout Queensland. So far Grant Daniel & Long have enjoyed many young auctioneers contest this event over the past 12 years.
Also it has been an ongoing commitment by the management to nominate staff for the prestigious Mike Nixon Award. The Mike Nixon National Award which was inaugurated in 2005 recognizes those in the stock agency industry who has excelled in marketing of livestock but who might not have received public recognition, unlike more high profile auctioneers.
In 2008 staff member Andrew McCallum, a former inaugural branch manager, and more recently the Rural Property and Real Estate manager, was named the Queensland finalist, and was the national winner.
In 2010 Ben Hindmarsh, the former Miles branch manager, and current livestock auctioneer based in Dalby head office was a Queensland finalist.
It is not only field staff who have contributed to the success of the company, but also some longstanding administration staff who work quietly and efficiently behind the scenes. In 2007 Grant Daniel & Long embarked on a 51% joint venture with the national company Ruralco, which represents 16 rural based brands through a national footprint of businesses that specialize in rural merchandise, wool and livestock agency, real estate agency, fertilizer manufacture, stock feed and grain storage, handling and distribution and financial services. This joint venture really gave the locally Queensland based agency valuable national connections while at the same time allowed the company the opportunity to investigate the opportunities to further grow the business in Queensland. This joint venture arrangement between Ruralco and Grant Daniel & Long has certainly exceeded the company’s expectations.
